Unsurprisingly, the Mazda tent at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was teeming, as people swarmed to get up close and personal to the striking range on display. One of the models creating most excitement was the popular all-new Mazda MX-5 RF, proudly showing off its Retractable Fastback roof which can be draw back in an impressive “12 seconds”.

According to the model’s Program Manager, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, this hardtop version of the Mazda MX-5 Convertible is designed to be more sophisticated than its counterpart, giving the cars “two different characters”; hence, the Retractable Fastback model has a “higher quality feel”, boasting premium Machine Grey paintwork and added features such as a “new LCD display in the dash”.

Yamamoto goes on to give further insights into the model, explaining that “despite the intricate construction, boot capacity remains the same as the regular MX-5’s, at 130 litres”, and that “the rear glass can also be lowered with the roof in place, allowing more air into the cabin in conditions where a fully opened top would not be desirable.”

The elegant all-new Mazda MX-5 RF will be available to purchase in the UK from 2017, with either a 1.5 litre or 2.0 litre engine. Whilst the price is currently unconfirmed, there is an “expected premium of around £2,500 over the regular roadster”.
